All Position Drive Tires VS Closed Shoulder Lug Drive Tires

We get this question quite often, can you run all position tires in the drive position on you semi truck? And the answer is YES!

Below, is actual comments from customers that run all position tires in the drive position.

THIS IS WHAT CUSTOMERS HAD TO SAY -

“I run primarily the northwest WA, ID OR, and MT and have run all position/steer tires in all positions, even my spread axle trailer for the last 3 years and on icy or snow packed roads you CAN'T beat em, they actually have a larger contact patch than a lug tire and are much easier to put chains on when you do have to chain because your not fighting the chains catching on the lugs when you trying to get them tight. Having said that I will say in deep snow or mud they aren't worth a darn but really how often are ya in deep snow and mud?”

“Yes, you can put all positions in the drive position. I ran my trucks that way for years, even in the Ohio winters. They do a great job in wet sleet, and snow. You will notice less traction in deep snow compared to a lug style tire. On dry pavement, you'll notice a nice quiet ride and less squirm than a lug tire. You can also rotate them from front to back in order to keep them all wearing properly.”

“Yes you can, I have all positions on my drives currently. I was really skeptical of using them in the winter. Back in November I had a load from MN to CA and it was 4 pallets a whopping 10,000 LBS and I was on US 287 in WY. I was heading down that road and found myself on ice, I was scared. I found that after a few miles, everything was fine. I didn't have any trouble for most of the trip through there from Casper to Rawlins. I had one section that was a bit uphill and the ice was pretty thick and I started to spin, I just backed off the throttle a bit and regained traction. I was impressed.”

“I've been running all position tires on the drive axles sense 1980 up in the Northwest and have never had a problem. There quiet no road noise easy to chain up and if you do run one low for some reason it won't cup out on you.”

“Not to mention that the rolling resistance will greatly improve along with fuel mileage.”

“All positions are a great tire choice for drive position. Hauled Turnpike doubles (twin 53's up to 137,500 lbs) in Canadian Prairies with them for 1 Winter, then changed jobs and went across the rockies in nasty winter conditions numerous times. I was impressed. Got 180.000 mls out of them (never rotated any). Traction was waaaay better than the closed shoulder lugs.”
