Tire category
All-terrain tires
All-terrain tires aim to balance everyday driving on pavement with extra grip on gravel, dirt and light off-road trails.
How they compare
- Compared with highway tires: more tread depth and bigger tread blocks for loose surfaces, usually with more road noise
- Compared with mud-terrain tires: generally quieter and longer wearing on pavement, but less able to clear deep mud
What to check before you choose
- The size recommended for your vehicle
- Load range, especially if you tow or haul
- Whether the tire carries the three-peak mountain snowflake mark, if winter driving matters. Only some models do.
- How much of your driving is on-road versus off-road
